Build Project Description
UPDATE: We are currently seeking *builders* to complete our bamboo construction (June); and starting a small bioconstruction & composting toilet build (July/August). Would love to have a skilled gardener to rescue our (trampled by horses) veggie & herb garden, and help with lunch prep. Need irrigation design & installation. Bilingual volunteers are preferred, as some of our teachers only speak English OR Spanish, but all are welcome to apply. We are a few kilometers inland from the beach town of Montañita, Ecuador. 1 hectare (2.5 acres) of lush, green, hilly land, covered in mature fruit trees & two simple living structures: open-air kitchen, yoga loft, office & bathroom. Forming a brand-new non-profit intentional community; eventually community education/free school & hospice/senior care. Right now, I am on my own. I don't have designs/plans - just some ideas and an open mind. Would love to meet people interested in designing & building from the ground up. We have so much to work with!
Structure of My Build Project
Building Styles Integrated
I am a complete noob to this world, and am simply open to possibilities. If you want a clean slate on which to build, this may be your dream project.
Sustainable Systems Integrated
Rain Water Collection
Grey-water re-use system
Food system integration
Passive Solar Hot Water
Natural Furniture building
I would love help integrating any of the above, especially a basic solar set-up, composting (squat?) toilets, grey-water & irrigation.
Build Project Facilities
Simple "glamping" - kitchen, bathroom/shower, yoga room, hammocks for napping/sleeping, mattresses on floor. Wi-Fi!
Activities near the Build Project
Eventually, I would love to host donation-based workshops of all sorts of things on the land. As for social activities, we are a $2.50 cab ride from the surfing capital of Ecuador, where they party all night - if you're into that sort of thing. I'll also be taking Spanish language lessons. If people are interested, we could have classes at Terra Nova.
What to Expect about Food
I am not builder...but, I AM a feeder! I will provide your vegetarian *work-day* meals. We do ask a $5-10/day contribution, to cover food, utilities and household expenses. I wish I could cover everything out of my own pocket, but it just gets too expensive with so many wanting to visit Terra Nova. Also, delicious lunches can be gotten in town for $2.50.

Previous Building Experience
Quite challenging, actually. Went way over budget, partially because we hadn't factored in feeding ten students & volunteers. Best to be clear from the beginning as far as expectations go. Trying not to be so easily swayed by, "professionals," claiming to have my best interests in mind.

Type of Volunteer Being Looked for
Creative, skilled, hard-working, problem-solving, reliable, honest & kind.
Where you will be Sleeping
Until more structures are built, we generally sleep in tents or in the kitchen/common area - in a hammock or on a mattress, with mosquito netting. We have: 3 tents 4 hammocks 5 mattresses
