Build Project Description

Interior bathroom addition to upstairs of existing 90 year old wood frame house. The composting toilet is installed and in use for 1 year successfully. We are now moving on to the cob wall with imbedded rocket stove and will be starting to build that April 2017. We have a detached building with heated bedroom that sleeps 3 (if 2 share a queen bed). We will also have outdoor rocket stove and cobbing projects as the weather warms and dries this year. We have plenty of camping space and fresh organic food from our chickens and extensive garden.

Build Project Facilities

Volunteers will sleep in our guest bedroom that has wifi, tea kettle, fridge, freezer, solar electricity, and its own hobbit-door that accesses its own grape-arbor/outdoor dining patio. We share two bathrooms in the main house, one with shower and one with an old fashioned claw-foot bathtub. We also share the main house kitchen, with all the usual appliances, etc.

Activities near the Build Project

We live in the Capitol city of Washington State, so there are amazing public buildings to visit like the Capitol Dome. There is a year-round Farmer's Market downtown, and lots of wonderful trails and boardwalks along the waterfront there. Local parks abound in beautiful old trees, and there are public shellfish beaches where you can gather oysters, clams, and mussels using our yearly permit. We have a canoe that you can borrow to explore the abundance of local lakes and calm inland seas.

What to Expect about Food

We will provide the food
We eat individually for morning and noon meals, so volunteers would have the use of the main house kitchen to self-prepare those meals. Dinner is shared and is gluten-free, low-sodium, vegetarian. We eat out of our garden year round and preserve our own organic produce as well as wild-harvested food. In the summer, we eat outside under the grape arbor, enjoying our grill there.

Where you will be Sleeping

Our guest bedroom is accessed through our shop/outdoor storage building. It is fully insulated, has solar power, heater, heating blanket, wifi, electric kettle with tea and fresh well water provided, and access to the shop fridge and freezer. The room has a queen lower bunk bed with memory foam on the futon, and the upper bunk is a memory foam over mattress single bed. There is a desk, stocked with what you may need for writing. There is also a massage chair for volunteers to use, and an upholstered armchair for relaxing. The outside door is half-size and handmade, leading to the outside dining area in a private grape arbor, surrounded by trees.

Hi Michael,

I'm sorry we missed your message until now. I've been out of action since last Fall due to hip problems and having both hip joints replaced. I'm back on my feet now and restarting my cob projects. If you want to come by anytime, we have a new bedroom built in an outbuilding that is available and can sleep 3. Let us know. We'd love to show you the various stages of projects underway about which we hope to post more and stay on top of better as I get stronger this summer. Thanks!
