Why I Build Sustainably

My husband and I are very aware of the damage being done to earth's resources and need to find a more sustainable way of living in harmony with the planet. We would in future like to take things further and share our sustainable knowledge and experience with others, friends, family, and our local community. An added bonus of course would be healthier living through organic home grown foods, not chemically and synthetically enhanced food products and reduced montly expenses. It will be great to eventually live off the grid completely and we strongly support Michael Tellingers 'money free' Ubuntu system.

Skills I would like to Work on or Share.

Teacher, music therapy, music entertainer, war, loving host, experienced traveller

My Life Philosophy

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” ― John Lennon

My Building Qualifications

I currently have no experience in working with these building materials but would like to gain as much experience as possible and do workshops and courses on building with cob, rammed earth, mud bricks, local materials like wood, straw, and tires.

My Occupation

Informally Studying horticulture, sustainability, farming

What I Read, Watch, and Listen to

Michael Tellingers book - Slave Species to the Gods Venus Project - movie Thrive Movement - movie about the search for new energy, banking elite, control over Ubuntu, a blueprint for human prosperity - Michael Tellinger Recoup, Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Sisters of Mercy, Sting, Folk music, Groove Armada, Air, Bob Marley, David Grey, Massive Attack, Faithless, John Lenon, Paul Simon, African music, Jeff Buckley, Metallica, Pearl Jam, Zero 7.

Building Styles I'm Interested in

Rammed Earth
Earthship/used tires
Straw Bale
Adobe/Mud Bricks
Reclaimed Materials
Local Materials (ie Sustainable Wood)
Stone/Flint walls
Its a natural way of using the local earth resources to build a strong and sturdy house without it being to cost effective. There's cob and rammed earth houses standing all over the Western Cape since 1654... Cool in the summer, warm due to their thick insulated walls in winter, and like clay you can shape them any size you like. Being from the western cape, I have experimced staying in cob houses before and love their old 'Cape dutch', cottage like style and feel.

My Education

B.Mus with performing arts, African music and ethnomusicology - South Africa Qualified Teacher Status in 2007 - Primary Class teacher, UK

I LOVE food and get very excited about trying out new healthy recipes. My husband and I are predominantly pescatarian (Vegetarian diet but eats fish and seafood). We are currently experimenting with sugar free recipes and alternatives so we can still enjoy having naughty little treats without feeling to guilty. We have a weakness for tropical fruits and dishes, and thai cooking and did a thai cooking course on a farm in chiang mai, thailand.
