My Build Projects

It’s happening right now!! The outdoor kitchen is a small practice project before we start on the house, and it’ll also make a lovely place to gather round and do some community building. It'll have a large cob pizza oven (mobile, for permit...
SORRY FOLKS, STILL HAVE NO DATE BUT WE’RE WORKING ON THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN RIGHT NOW! SEE MY OTHER PROJECT ~~~ I want to build a low impact cob house for my family plus two other women with kids and a little space for guests, creating a...

Why I Build Sustainably

To me, sustainable building should be a given, something that doesn't even have to be discussed. I just can't claim not to care whether this earth will be habitable a coupla hundred years from now if there is something I can do about it. Part of it is my kids... I want to leave them a good place to live, and a perspective, and I'm sure they will want the same for their kids, and so on. The other part is spiritual beliefs: All is one, and life is so much poorer when you don't care.

Skills I would like to Work on or Share.

I want to make music again! I love singing, especially with others and in multiple voices. And there's a myriad of other things I like, most of which are more fun when enjoyed together (crochet/knitting/other crafts...).

My Occupation

Self-taught freelance web developer.

What I Read, Watch, and Listen to

Not interested in films. Could fill pages with the other two, but here are some books I feel are most relevant to my project and my life right now: The Empowerment Manual (Starhawk), for community-building skills; Integral Spirituality (Ken Wilber), which I am currently reading with growing excitement; and The Hand-Sculpted House (Ianto Evans, Michael G. Smith, Linda Smiley), because out of all the books I've read on cob building, this was the first, and also the one that hit a nerve within me from the start.

Building Styles I'm Interested in

Straw Bale
Reclaimed Materials
Local Materials (ie Sustainable Wood)
Mud totally speaks to me, and straw bales are sensible to use in an area as cold as mine!

My Education

Most of the important stuff is self-taught. I love reading informative books (fiction not so much).

My Eating Habits

I love potatoes! Not a very good cook but working on it (and improving). And ever since I've had kids, I've felt that drinking cow's milk is reeeeaaaally weird. Currently leaving it out of all my food to see how that works out for me.
